EVAs
What is an EVA?
In the FMARS expedition, crew members conduct EVAs in the vicinity of the habitat and surrounding areas on Devon Island. They perform scientific studies, test equipment and procedures, and practice exploration activities while operating under constraints similar to those that will be faced by future Mars explorers.
Over the course of the 2009 FMARS simulation, the crew completed 16 EVAs in 43.5 hrs, traveling a distance of 128 km. This translates into a cumulative in simulation (in-sim) crew time of 106 man-hours and a distance of 323 km.
The crew collected detailed data during each EVA, including GPS track, elevation, heart rate, and geographically-reference high resolution imagery. Combined into a detailed report with lessons learned, these unique data sets allow for enhanced understanding of the EVA experience. Much of this information is available below.
